How to use earthy colours to create warm and stylish spaces in your home
If you’re looking for inspiration on how to create a home that marries warmth and style, then look no further!
The earthy interior design colour trend is here to stay well into 2025, to get us through those cold, dark months. So here’s my top tips for creating spaces that make you feel like you never want to leave the house.
5 tips to add earthy colours to your home..
1. Colour drench the whole room
Don’t be scared to be bold, this trend is about leaning in to colour by drenching the walls, ceiling and woodwork in the same colour to create a sense of warmth and drama.
Dark greens, chocolate brown and deep indigo blues work really well for creating rooms that feel dramatic but still warm and cosy.
For more depth of colour, opt for a matt paint, check out Farrow and Ball’s Dead Flat range.
2. Layer accessories in natural materials
If you don’t want to commit to painting a whole room in a dark shade, you can embrace the look by choosing soft furnishings like curtains, upholstery, cushions and throws in earthy tones.
You can choose fabrics in different patterns that embrace the same earthy tones and add visual interest and warmth.
3. Add depth by mixing textured fabrics
Fabrics like wool, linen, velvet, boucle and leather all add warmth and style to spaces. Mix different fabrics in your chosen earthy colour palette, like dark greens, rusty oranges and chocolate browns - they all provide some drama and look and feel super cosy!
Using boucle fabric on sofas, armchairs and cushions adds a sense of quiet luxury to a room and creates the feeling of warm, adding more texture to a scheme.
4. Add depth with warm lighting
You don’t need to stop at soft furnishings. Choosing table lamps in a chocolate brown or warm caramel with a linen shade provide those early tones and will also be timeless.
Go for a hint of luxe and include lamps made of chocolate marble or caramel ceramic bases, the choice of luxe or natural materials like marble and wicker can really elevate your design.
5. Complete your room with a rug in earthy tones
You have many choices when it comes to completing your scheme with a rug. If you want to add further warmth, opt for a textured rug with a deep pile like shag rugs that feel warm and inviting underfoot or Jute rugs that add that natural texture.
Alternatively, add a rug with a pattern that incorporates earthy tones, that will balance nicely with neutral furniture. Indian rugs often incorporate earthy shades and add more visual interest and can make a scheme feel more relaxed.
